Melissa Harris-Perry turned down MSNBC’s severance package Tuesday over what she described to CNNMoney as a “gag order.”

Here’s what she told the site:

“They wanted me to sign a non-disparagement clause, and we had a deep disagreement over what constituted the non-disparagement clause. They wanted me not to speak about MSNBC. I said no.”

Simmering anger reached a boiling point when she refused to host her show, Melissa Harris-Perry, last weekend after the network preempted it for the previous two consecutive weekends. Harris-Perry published an email that stated:

“I will not be used as a tool for their purposes. I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head.”

That published email infuriated the network. On Sunday, MSNBC announced that it was terminating her program. Yvette Miley, the senior vice president of talent and diversity, told CNN that the network preempted Harris-Perry’s show to cover the presidential primary—as it did with other MSNBC programs.

But Harris-Perry’s husband, James Perry, told CNNBusiness that the network’s actions followed a pattern in which MSNBC “disappeared” other shows on the network hosted by people of color:

“Over the past year, a lot of employees have been disappeared from MSNBC, and what we’ve observed is there is a clear process for how they’ve been disappeared: You get taken out of the system and your name as a host is taken out of it as well. And then when you communicate and ask them about it, you don’t get any response.”

Harris-Perry sent this tweet Tuesday to former MSNBC hosts of color (Martin Bashir, Toure and Karen Finney) whose shows were canceled:

On the way out the door, free to speak her mind, Harris-Perry unleashed a series of epic tweets as a farewell to the network and her show:

Well played.
