It has been 25 years since Def Comedy Jam put on tons of black comedians. Rickey Smiley explains that for the first few years of his career, he didn’t perform in front of black audiences, because it was simply not how the industry worked. Then, he got his first show for a black audience- opening up for Ice Cube and N.W.A. The audience didn’t take to him very kindly.
