Known for his hip-hop roots and philanthropic efforts, Russell Simmons has vowed to helped the thousands in Flint, Michigan affected by the water crisis.

Russell’s company RushCard has teamed up with AQUAhydrate to donate 150,000 bottles of water to the residents of Flint. Russell’s donation is part of Sean “Puffy” Combs and Mark Wahlberg’s effort to deliver one million bottles of water. AQUAhydrate has been working closely with the Red Cross and community leaders to help disperse the water to all in need.

Russell also spoke to Fox 2 Detroit Monday morning, saying, “It has to do with sending less fortunate and people of color less services. In this particular case, they were voters who didn’t vote for the governor (Rick Snyder). They’re underserved community members. … The fact is, no one black voted for this governor and I think they’re less important to him.

Russell is currently in Flint handing out bottles of water.

He has met with several Michigan residents affected by the lack of clean water.

He’s also calling for other businesses and corporations to help with the relief effort.
